Looking to try a new brand of packs called Eberlestock. I have been using Camp Trails Elk Pack but tried replacing them every year after they fall apart. Has anyone try this brand and if so any comments about them?

Hey Richard,

I've no experience with the Eberlestock, but have heard good things about the J-107.  For serious backpack hunting, or hauling big loads etc… I would suggest the Mystery Ranch NICE 6500 or a Barneys Hunter.  Barney's is a sponsor of our site.  They both make excellent packs, lightyears ahead of the camp trails.

I use an Eberlestock Gunslinger II. The quality is top notch. They put a lot of thought into their bags and it shows in both design and workmanship. There is molle webbing everywhere, and their suspension system is super comfortable and adjustable. I'm about 50/50 on their integral scabbard design packs such as the gunslinger and dragonfly though. I like that I can actually draw my shotgun without removing the pack or taking my eyes off whatever has my attention. I carry a shotgun in addition to my rifle when I'm hunting solo in Grizzly country. It also does a great job of protecting your rifle/ optics. What I failed to consider at the time of purchase, is that the void is quite large. If you don't intend to pack your rifle in it, then you really need to cinch down the lateral straps to hold the gear in the bag compartment close to your back. Otherwise the load isn't being carried optimally. And even after it's all cinched up, the top remains somewhat open. It would benefit from a zipper or velcro or something to prevent this. there is also a considerable amount of bulk attributed to that scabbard. In retrospect, I think a side scabbard attached to the molle would have been a better choice. Depending on your size needs, I would try something like the Halftrack or FAC Track.

Just my humble opinion.
