So, I'm going to be hunting Bighorns here in AB, in Oct. I'm not an in-experienced hunter, but would like to hear from a few of you with regard to some of my gear. I have a 4 season tent, a MEC Lightfield. It's not the lightest, but the price was right, and I think the time of year dictates a 4 season tent. The other lightweight tents that I have, have too much mesh where I think there should be material, for camping at that time of year. I have a Cabela's XPG sleeping bag that has served me well, but I am seriously considering getting an overbag to boost it's temp rating, and to help bleed off excess moisture. This combo will be used on top of an Exped Downmat 7, inside the aforementioned tent. Thoughts, anyone? I do sleep "warm", and even though I will be camping high, I don't think there will be any issues. I'm using a Brunton Raptor stove and GSI Pinnacle Soloist pot set. I'm good to go for clothing, all fleece, with waterproof outer layers, top and bottom. Tikka T3 Lite, SS, 270 WSM. 10 x 42 Nikon Monarchs, and a 15 – 45 x 60 (?) spotting scope. I'm going to be out for ten days; I'm 52, and in decent shape. Anyway, looking forward to hearing from you guys.

Hey Gord,

Thanks for your questions.  I think your list looks pretty good for right now.  I too am going on a late season sheep hunt this year and will be posting up my gear list in the next few days.

The Exped Downmat 7 is a really good choice, I am not sure the temp. rating on your sleeping bag though.  You might want to wear long johns to bed, (I usually do this anyways).

The Brunton stove along with your pot set will work fine… Just keep the fuel canisters warm.  I use a Jetboil (built in pots).

Fleece clothing is tried and true, Merino Wool would also work well for base and light mid layers.

It sounds like you're geared up and ready to go.

Thanks, Carl: Yeah, I'm just trying to sort everything out so that I don't have to waste any hunting time dealing with gear issues. Having said that, who knows what the weather will bring this Oct; sometimes, winter comes early, but, when it does……..it moves those sheep down out of the hills….and I'll be waiting. LOL. Have a good season.

Oh, by the way, the main bag is rated for 0 deg F, and it is a synthetic bag' with a hood. This why I'm considering an overbag. I do have a military bivy bag that I have used in the past, but mostly during warmer weather. I do plan on wearing LJ's to sleep in, and a toque if I need to. We will see.

So, further to my last post, I think I have all my gear together. I ordered a new Whisperlite, as I'm worried about the fuel cannisters not doing their job if (when) it gets cold. Even better, I have a really good buddy who is coming with me, to help pack things into camp, and to help pack out a ram should it happen. He's not even going to take a rifle, as he already has four rams, one of which is in the 190's. We hike in on the 15th of Oct, and I hunt until the 29th, and back to work on the 30th, or earlier, depending on the sheep. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Gord,

That's Great!  Sounds like you're all set for a great hunt.  The fuel canisters are a pain in the a$$ if they get too cold.  My stove gets real hard to light sometimes (JetBoil) if the fuel canister is cold.

I'll be leaving on my hunt around the 5th and our season is closed on the 15th.

Good luck Gord!

Thanks, Carl. Good luck to you on your hunt. I really envy you being able to hunt Stone's sheep. A move to BC isn't in the cards for me, nor is a guided hunt. Guess I have to live vicariously through you guys in BC. Anyway, have a good hunt, and we'll compare notes once the smoke..er. snow?… clears. LOL.

So, it's late in coming, but, a little report on my Oct 2011 sheep hunt. First, I didn't get a ram. Not for lack of effort, but, due to an injury about 2/3 of the way through the hunt. I ended up doing day hunts out of a good buddy's place, which is totally do-able here. I was finding sheep, and had a great plan for the last 6-7 day push, when I ended up with a vicious combination of shin splints and a rolled ankle in my left leg. This stopped me from hiking, as it reallistically (sp?) threatened the rest of my hunting season. So, I came home early, with my tail between my legs. But, the planning, and training, is in motion for 2012. In addition to this, I will report on my backpack, which was a Kuiu Icon 6000. Nice pack, roomy, comfortable, fully adjustable, but….not for me. I have used the external frame packs for years, that have the larger aluminum frames, and much prefer them. So, I have a once used pack for sale, that is still in perfect condition. Contact me at gtrelnuk@mcsnet.ca for further details. The pack can viewed at Kuiu.com. Thanks for looking, guys.Smile
