Does anyone know the "specific" type of hunting boots Jim Shockey wears?  I am interested in the type he uses in the fall, slightly insulated, in mountain terrain.

I will be going on an elk hunt and want to look at the "exact" same type.

I checked on his web site with no success.

Thank you!

That's a good question, and I don't know the answer…  I can tell you that I wear a set of Hanwag Trapper Tops from Lathrop & Sons for all my hunts.  Great place to buy boots.

Thank you for the info.  I will take a look at these boots.

I've read many different forums on boots and the responses cover pretty much every boot made.  Most do lean toward the higher end type boots.

On this web site, as I type this response, there is a man standing on a ridge, with a backpack, rile in pack and 2 walking sticks.  He is wearing sometype of very high top boot.  I am curious to what these may be as their appear similar to what Shockey wears on many of his bear hunts.

I am also interested in what survivalist like Les Stroud wear for boots.

It is my thought that people like Shockey and Stroud do an excessive amount of walking and can have any type of boot made so I assume they will be wearing a great boot.  Any boot manufacturer would love to have these guys wear their footwear but if it's not a great boot they are not going to do it.  I believe most hunts start and finish with your legs and of all my hunting apparel I want my feet to be the most comfortable.

My hunt will be in the mountains hunting elk.  Temperatures will be anywhere from 25 degrees early morning to 45 during the day.  There could be some snow on the ground but not always.

I guess I'm looking for any boot that will fit that order and really interested in what those that can where anything, choose.

Thanks for any and all responses!

Hey There Double Drop,

The man on the ridge is actually me on a sheep hunt a few years ago.  I am wearing Hanwag Trapper Tops from Lathrop & Sons and have a set of black gaiters on.

Hanwag are a german made boot, and Lathrop is the main importer. They are all hunters, and great guys to deal with.

Give em' a call and tell them Carl from the BCHuntingBlog sent you.

I've put a few hundred miles on that set you see in the photo and they still have a hunt or three left in them.

Carl,

Thanks for the info.  Can you tell me if it takes a lot to break these boots in, are they good boot for semi colder weather (25 to 45) and for putting a lot of miles on walking.

I have no doubt they are a fine quality boot but some boots a person has to put many miles on them before they begin to break in.

What other types of boots do you also wear?

I will never go sheep hunting and do the very steep terrain were extra support is needed but I will hunt more in the rolling hills where the elk can be found.

I also have other hunting/camping questions if you wouldn't mind giving me your opinion on.  Very much appreciated.  Thank you!

Hi Dean,

They aren't too bad to break in actually.  They are a very nice German made boot.  After switching to Hanwag a few years ago I have not tried any other boots.

If you're doing lots of rolling hills etc… You might not need the hightop (10" upper) like I have, you could get away with something a little shorter.

I like the hightops for the extra support along with creek crossings and a little protection from scree, rock etc…

Feel free to ask all the questions you want!  I am happy to help.
