Wild Bison In BC
There are many people in the province who don’t realize BC has a few small but thriving wild Bison herds scattered amongst the northern reaches of the province. Pink Mountain and Liard River are two such areas where the Bison still roam. For BC resident hunters there is an opportunity to harvest bison through the limited entry hunting system we have in the province. It’s a popular draw, so the odds aren’t that great but it’s a very challenging hunt but if succesful provides hundreds of pounds of excellent table fare.
The Bison in the Pink Mountain area were actually ranch buffalo released by an old-time outfitter many years ago. They have grown into a herd that supports several hundred animals and is getting to the point now where we actually need to allocate more of these buffalo to resident hunter harvest. The bison are not native to the area and have now begun to push other ungulates out of the area such as sheep, elk and moose because there is a lack of good feed. The current herd is quite healthy and could likely sustain an increase in harvest with very little (if any) impact to herd health.
